    Explanation:

    In the article titled The Crisis, which was written by Thomas Paine in December 23, 1776

    Part of the opening paragraph of The Crisis; "These are the times that try men's souls ... Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet ... the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph"

    Hence, noting that this article was written on the day the General Washington crossed the Delaware River in retreat, and at a time when the Continental Army was been defeated by the British a number of times. Thomas Paine is however, comforting the reader with the understanding that even though the present times are tough and challenging, victory is possible.
