    Explanation:

    The legislature is the second arms of government in democracy whose primary function is to make law for the good governance of the nation. In some countries that practice presidential system of government such as United States and Nigeria they have bicameral legislature which comprises of the upper chamber of the legislative house known as Senate and the lower chamber of the legislative house known as house of repreresentatives collectively they are known as congress particularly in United States. They perform the following functions

    Making of law : They make law for the good governance of the nation, the bill for such an act may come from the members themselves or it may comes from the executive or from the civil society to the house to be made into law, when such bill has passed through the necessary stages it may be passed into law.

    Ratification of executive nomination : The congress is given the powers by the constitution to ratify the nomination made by the president to the post of either ministers or judges to the high court or supreme court, or the nomination of ambassadors to the foreign missions

    Impeachment of president: The congress is given the powers by the constitution to impeach the president through what is called impeachment exercise by bringing an allegation of misconduct against the president, if the president is found guilty by the two houses the president stands impeached from office.

    Approval of the annual budget : The congress is given the powers by the constitution to approve the annual budget of the country, when the executive submitted their budget to the congress they look in to the budget by calling each agencies of government to come and defend their budget. At the end of the exercise the budget will be approved, they have the power to either increase the budget or cut down the size of the budget. The executive cannot spend any money from the treasury without the approval of the congress.

    Ratification of foreign treaties and agreement : The congress is given the powers by the constitution to ratify any treaties or agreement the country entered into with other countries of the world.

    Amendment of the existing law including the constitution : The congress has the power under the constitution to amend all existing laws including the constitution of the nation. such amendment is done after it has gone through the necessary amendment process in the congress.
