    Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was a British journalist, novelist, essayist and political economist. He was an important activist for women's emancipation.

    Her first article "On Female Education", written in 1823, stated that the progress of society was based on individual progress, said: "The progression or emancipation of a class, usually, if not always, happens through the individual efforts of that class".
