The people assuming that flying is more dangerous than driving is just people making a quick decision without actually comsidering the facts or thinking it through.

Availability heuristic is one of the types of heuristic, and can be explained or described as a mental shortcut, where conclusion or judgement is made on an event due to or base on examples that quickly, immediately or instantly come to mind.

This means that, when a person is thinking that an event is common simply because he/she have watched or read severally about the incidence or event.

In this case, the assumption of people that flying is more dangerous than driving could be based on the incidence they have watched severally, and this is an example of availability heuristic.

Another example of heuristic is reprensentativeness heuristic.
