In a study done in the 1960's, homeowners were asked to put a 3 inch "Be a Safe Driver" sign in their cars. Two weeks later, people were asked to place a large, ugly "Drive Carefully" sign in their front yard. Of the people who agreed to put the small sign in their cars, 76% agreed to put the sign in their yards, whereas only 17% of those who didn't get asked to put a sign in their cars agreed to put the sign in their front yards. If the request is accepted and the person who agreed feel an obligation to agree to a bigger request to stay consistent to the their first decision. This method is used to increase the likelihood of agreeing to your request. It is a reference to the door to door salesman who keeps the door from shuting with his foot.
