    The justification the Southern states gave that made them able to break away from the Union was its desire to preserve the institution of slavery. The Southern States were primarily interested in making slavery of the black continue.

    The republican supported the abolition of slavery which was why when Abraham Lincoln who was a republican won the election the Southern states in the region decided to break away from the union.
