Articles of confederation kept the national government to be weak and fragile and allowed the states to be as independent as possible.

    Explanation:

The purpose of article of confederation is to make the states retain its sovereignty and freedom. According to articles of confederation, congress was given powers to make treaties with foreign countries, declare war, maintain navy and army, establish postal service, manage native american issues and mint money. But the congress was not given the power to levy taxes and execute laws which were considered to be significant during the time of a war emergency. The central government was kept intentionally weak because of the widespread fear that the central government may become despotic like the European parliament.

The two main weaknesses of articles of confederation were it did not allow congress to collect taxes and execute laws. There were many other weakness of articles of confederation such as every state was given only one vote regardless of size in the congress, absence of executive and judicial branch and congress was not given the power to regulate the interstate commerce.
