Why was it so important for a knight to take a vow of loyalty to his lord?

    It was important for a knight to take a vow of loyalty to his lord in order to ensure fidelity to that lord. Often, a knight would receive a fief (plot of land) in exchange for his vow. This was the basis of the feudal system.
