Answer:Although the practice of giving or paying a dowry is many Centuries old, it is still practiced in many countries.

As an example, India has introduced a law banning the practice of paying a Dowry for several reasons. These include the financial strain on the bride's family as well as violence against the bride by the husband that occurs frequently when the Dowry is seen as insubstantial.

Another example is that Turkey reportedly has a domestic violence rate, (caused purely for reasons of the husband being unhappy at the Dowry), at a rate of 500 victims a year ... obviously all new bride's.

Despite being an ancient custom across Europe, East Asia & South East Asia, The Middle East, Africa and North America, the custom has developed an unsavory view due to the violence it has caused to women worldwide. I hope that has answered your question satisfactory.

One more thing to consider is the Human Rights Charter, Dowries would definitely be seen as inhumane towards women as women are not an item that should be bought or sold!

Equal rights to all people regardless of gender, race and religious beliefs, or financial situation, is my personal belief. I am no better than you and vice versa. We all need oxygen and water, food and shelter plus love from our families and friends!
