The person who was responsible for funding the attempts to colonize (building colony) at Roanoke was Sir Walter Raleigh. The establishment or building of Roanoke Colonies was an ambitious attempt by Sir Walter Raleigh. The idea behind building this colony was to create a permanent North American settlement aimed at mining for gold, silver, shipping, exploring a route to the Pacific Ocean, and Christianizing Indians (making Indians into Christian).

The first colony built in 1585 by Governor Ralph Lane while the second colony established in 1587 by Governor Ralph Lane. Both of these colonies were established on the same Island (Roanoke Island).
