    Rosencrantz and Guildenstern do try to find out what is wrong with Hamlet but serve as Claudius' pawns against Hamlet.

    Explanation:

    Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are childhood friends of Hamlet employed by Claudius to see what Hamlet is thinking. They never have an overbearing interest in solving the issues that Hamlet has as much as just to know them to report to Claudius.

    Hamlet is able to see through their ruse and when they finally turn on him, he anticipates it and is able to orchestrate their death.

    They remain unsuccessful in their task and ambiguous in their motivation.
