Johnson makes allusions to conflicts from throughout U. S. history. Why would he make these allusions?

Johnson was making those allusion inorder to remind the american people about the history of America as a country and its struggles in terms of wars and conflict.

For example, his reference to Appomattox as the scene of a major Civil War battle as well as Selma and Alabama, being the site of a protest that turned violent was to show that American freedom and conflict are interwined together.
