    E. the North had a much more substantial economy.

    Explanation:

The American civil war which started in 1861 up to 1865 was a conflict between ideological, social, political and economic differences between the Northern and Southern states of the United States of America. However, the conditions of the northern state were very different and even advantageous to that of South. The Northern states were more industrialized and in the south, only 10 percent live in cities. Some families even benefited from the manufacturing of war material in North. Moreover, more battles were fought on southern soil which further created problems for southerners.
