In Virginia, how did farming in the Appalachian mountains differ from farming in the eastern coastal lowlands?

In the colonial period, people settled in Virginia looking for economic opportunities. Some of the early people who settled in Virginia were known as "cavaliers" which is the nobility by the English who received large lands to do farming.

Farmers in the eastern coastal lowlands of Virginia have large plantations which grew 'cash crops' that include rice, indigo and tobacco and they export them to Europe.

However, in the inland and in the Appalachian mountains, people did subsistence farming in a small scale. They also survived on hunting and trading.
