Self concept is the realization that we are individuals, different from others. It starts as early as 18 months in children. By the age of four, children can describe themselves using personal attributes, and emotional characteristics by age 6.

Self concept can be molded by cultural influences. For example in Collectivistic cultures, where there is an emphasis on interdependent relationships and belonging to communities and families, a study found that individuals are more likely to describe themselves as playing a social role such as "I am Jane's father".

An Individualistic culture on the other hand enforces an independent self concept and creates a view of the self based on personal attributes.
