Explanation: Researchers Emmy Werner and Ruth Smith carried out a longitudinal study of children born on Kauai island. Some of these children were faced with several odds, starting as early as during pregnancy or at birth, experienced poverty in early childhood and were raised by troubled families.

The children who had a combination of some of these factors showed behavioral problems during adolescence but about 33% of them grew up to become successful in their personal and professional lives.

The researchers observed that these people drew on protective factors within themselves, families or their community during their formative years. Those who did not draw on this strength early also managed to turn their lives around when they were older, between 32 and 40.
