How did dissidents in satellite states and non-Russian Soviet republics affect the collapse of the Soviet Union?

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) collapsed in the late 1980s. This overthrow of the Soviet Empire is related to the erosion of the communist model of government, implanted in Russia in 1917 and spread to other Eastern European countries in following decades, especially during the period of Stalinist totalitarianism.
