Why were Americans interested in having a weak national government

    Many Anti-Federalists preferred a weak central government because they equated a strong government with British tyranny. Others wanted to encourage democracy and feared a strong government that would be dominated by the wealthy. They felt that the states were giving up too much power to the new federal government.

    After they were under a monarch for so long, the colonists decided that if they were able to form a government, they would try as hard as possible to limit the power that the leader had and prevent themselves from having another monarchy
