We can see some results of something and then make a broader conclusion that what we see represent what is in a broader sense even though we may not have enough data to make such conclusion.

For example we can use our experience with fewer individual of a particular race to overgeneralize that if that has been our experience with just fewer people of that race then the experience will be the same with everyone from that race.

Overgeneralization can occur as we write arguments, in our thoughts and in political debates and it can even happen in our research work or in mathematical reasoning, or the reasoning in scientific or other academic research.
