Gender roles are understood as the specific behaviors, attitudes and values which are expected from each gender by society. It is what you are expected to do if you are a boy or a girl. For example, boys are expected to be tough and not show emotion and girls are expected to be delicate.

These behaviors are very clearly seen in sports; boys tend to be rewarded for their competitiveness since it is expected of them for their gender, and girls are encouraged to play nicely, another gender role.
