What role did the Know-Nothing's play in the debate over immigration

So, this party prevented Catholics and also the immigrants from being elected in political offices. Since they were working class, they also feared competition in jobs from the immigrants. Millard Fillmore was the candidate for President for the American party but they lost and the party was declined.
