The effect the Electoral college have is that, It makes it difficult for third-party or independent candidates to win.

Explanation:

A process created by the constitution to ensure the settlement of differences between voting by the congress to elect the President and electing the President by qualified citizens vote is known as Electoral college. It is made up of a number of 538 members who deliberate on who becomes the President and who does not.

This process can be very unfair to third parties and this was seen to play when, in 1992, Ross Perot who was an independent candidate had only 19% of popular votes. Nonetheless, the Electoral college has its advantages as it preserves the voice of the minority states. It also provides a two-house race as the winner will most likely get 50% of the popular vote allowing the President to govern. A candidate could win in a popular vote cast and then lose at the electoral college.
