Settlers thought that American Indians did not productively use the land.

Nomadic peoples were viewed by settlers as being less civilized.

The settlers made many excuses to remove the natives, but in reality they just wanted the natives to be removed from the society that was formed there, so that they would have all the land that once belonged to the natives without having to face the natives.
