In this excerpt, his negative and nervous mindset is shown by claiming not having broken the vase, which he clearly did; this also shows his absent-mindedness, as he was struggling to keep focused as he was retrieving the vase. The passage actually decribes the moment as being completely blank in his head ("the next thing was that ... "), as if everything had happened in the blink of an eye.
