It is a matter of identifying the individual with the values, attitudes and behaviors practiced by the group. For example, the family may be a reference group or not for the individual. It all depends on the individual's adherence to family values. Another example, some individuals have as their reference group the political radicals, although they do not belong to this group of politicians, but agree with the values spread by them.
