The correct answer is Thunder from distant storms is often not heard because of sound dissipation and the curvature of the earth.

Thunder is a sound phenomenon generated by the movement of electric charges in the atmosphere. The sounds of thunder occur due to the sudden warming and the rapid expansion of air, thus producing a strong pressure that manifests itself through sound, called thunder.
