The "Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves" entered into force on January 1, 1808, ending the American slave trade for good. On his State of the Union Address of 1806, president Thomas Jefferson denounced slavery, deeming it a gross violation of human rights. Congress passed the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves on March 2, 1807, with president Jefferson signing the bill that very same day. The earliest this law could enter in force was by the first day of 1808.

However, while international slave trade was banned, slavery in the United States continued for several decades. American slave traders later circumvented the ban by importing slaves through territories that were not yet states, like Florida and Texas.
