Alexander the Great was leading an army to conquer what he believed was the eastern end of the world - India. He then intended to turn west and conquer western Europe, which he thought was the western end of the world. Then his ego would be satisfied - to have conquered the world. His name would live forever. In times before belief in an afterlife, people could live on in people's memory.
