During the Cold War in Europe, much of Germany was divided between Britain, America, France, and the Soviets. This led to the three (the Republican Western territories) being absorbed into a new state, called the "Federal Republic of Germany", and the Soviet area (the Communist Eastern bloc) became the "German Democratic Republic".
