The systematic, government-sponsored mass murder of over six million Jews and other ethnic groups by the Nazi regime is known as The Holocaust. The Holocaust was the state-sponsored systematic persecution/annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators (1933 to 1945). Gypsies, the handicapped, and Poles were also targeted for destruction for racial, ethnic, or national reasons. It was the genocide (the largest one of the twentieth century) of Jews during World War II, sponsored by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party and which occurred throughout the Third Reich and in the territories occupied by the Germans during the war.
