Nuclear proliferation is the spread of nuclear weapons. In order to make the world a safer place, the United Nations agreed in 1968 (and again in 1995) to prevent any new nations from developing or acquiring nuclear weapons. All nations in the UN have agreed to allow inspectors, known as the International Atomic Energy Agency, to investigate the potential creation of nuclear weapons within their borders. Recently, the United Nations has imposed sanctions on countries such as Iran and North Korea for violating terms of the treaty.
