    Encouraged by Poland's example, Hungarian students and workers organized demonstrations. They demanded that pro-Soviet officials be replaced, that Soviet troops be withdrawn, and that noncommunist political parties be organized. Khrushchev responded brutally and restored hard-line communists to power.
