The leader of the Mexican Army was President General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during the battle of the Alamo.

Following a 13 day siege, in December 1835, Mexican troops under President General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Bexar (modern day San Antonio, Texas, United States) killing the Texian defenders.

During the siege, newly elected delegates from across Texas met at the convention of 1836. On March 2, the delegates declared independence, forming the Republic of Texas.
