The people of the Darfur region protested and rebelled against the Sudanese government. The conflict began in 2003 when the rebels accused the government of oppressing Darfur's non-Arab population.

In response, the government carried out a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the non-Arabs. The government militias committed many monstrosities, terrorized civilians and stopped foreign aid from reaching Darfur. The conflict left thousands of people dead and millions displaced.

The ethnic cleansing in the Darfur region is consider to be one of the biggest genocides in recent history.
