North Carolina was one of the southern states where slavery was permitted. Slaves were critical to the agriculture industry, serving the "cotton boom" that was going on during the second part of the 19th century.

However, the first signs of unsettlement regarding slavery were starting to appear in the country. Antislavery fanatic John Brown tried to take control of a federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry in 1859. These efforts were seen as a menace to the interests of businessmen in the southern states, who heavily depended on slaves as their primary workforce.
