    Alcohol use problems among parents can have damaging effects of teenage children's development of social skills and mental health. When a parent abuses alcohol, the children are unlikely to receive the care they need which may result in dysfunctional behaviors such as isolation ans excessive self-consciousness.

It has been found that teenage children of alcoholics present dysfunctional social skills; they have a hard time socializing with peers and tend to isolate themselves, they have low self esteem and are very self-conscious. They can display excessive perfectionism, as this provides the sense of control and stability they lack of at home.
