The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act is a law put into place in India that stipulates a minimum of one hundred days of paid work in rural areas, within five kilometers of the home of the workers. Adult members of the household must volunteer to do unskilled manual work. If work is not given within fifteen days of an applicants application, they are entitled to receive unemployment wages. Workers create wells, roads, and canals to increase rural living standards.
