Patriarchy is the social concept that puts the men of a population in privileged positions of dominance and leadership, to the detriment of the social welfare of women, who are placed as inferior, weak and with a deficient intellect, to take care of themselves and take their own decisions. As a result, a society ends up establishing an intense social inequality, where women not only lose social privileges, but also lose social and political rights that decrease their quality of life.

In Ghana, patriarchal society has not only placed women as submissive, it has also provided unacceptable situations for their lives. In Ghana, patriarchy places women at a loss for their families, which causes girls to be sold or given in marriage when they are still children and adolescents. These girls, therefore, are deprived of a quality education that would make them apt in knowledge and skills that would make them as capable citizens as men.
