Making an inference is a reasonable thing to do when you first describe the observable behavior that led to the inference.

An inference is a conclusion or opinion you form after having seen or perceived something such as a behavior, a text, an action, an event, etc.

For instance, let's suppose you briefly see a woman you don't know being protective and affectionate with a two-year-old girl (a behavior or action), from this you may infer that the woman is the little girl's mom. However, your inference would not make sense at all if you don't describe the behavior of her mom towards the child.
