The Star-Spangled Banner is a poem written by the then 35-year-old lawyer, amateur poet Francis Scott Key on 14 September 1814. Key was a witness to the Fort McHenry bombing by British Royal Navy ships in the port of Baltimore. The bombing occurred during the Battle of Baltimore, in the war of 1812. The poet wrote this poem because he was inspired by the great American flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes. The flag is known as the Star-Spangled Banner, which triumphantly flared during the US victory.
