Dorothea Dix was born in Maine, and grew up in Massachussets, but at the age of twelve she went to live with her grandmother in Boston. She started a school for poor and neglected children out of her grandmother's barn. She was depressive and suffered from poor health. She went to Europe where she was introduced to reform systems to care for the mentally ill. Back in America she did research into the facilities for the mentally ill and became an important advocate for this cause.
