People settle along the coast and near lakes and rivers for several reasons. Large bodies of water allow people and goods to be transported, and cities usually develop near ports and harbors. In addition to the practical reasons for living near water, many people enjoy living near water for the view and for sailing, fishing, swimming, surfing, and other forms of recreation.
