Colonialism in Kenya introduced important changes in transportation, through the Kenya-Ugand railway, that crossed the Kenyan territory and thus connected the western part of the country with the eastern coast. The railway met the resistance and opposition of native Africans, its construction brought about two large ethnic issues: on one hand, the natives who rebelled against the railway were put into ethnic reerves; on the otyher, a large amount of workers were brought from India. A third area is land ownership. British and other European settlers had more land available for themselves after the displacement of native Africans to reserves; they began consolidating large areas into tea and coffee farms, which the Africans could not own; therefore, instead of cultivating their own lands, or cultivating freely as the nomadic Kikuyu used to do, they now became workers in the farms of the British settlers.
