Manifest Destiny in United States History is the idea that God gave the right to Americans to expand the country from sea to sea.

This created a need for the Missouri Compromise wherein the state of Maine was admitted as a "free state" and Missouri a "slave state" to keep the balance of power in the United States with their new additions. This was done with the hope of easing tensions between the North and the South.
