Why did plantations develop in the southern colonies, but were unable to in new england? Question options: colonists in new england did not believe in growing tobacco. The soil and climate in new england made large-scale farming impossible. The southern colonies could focus on growing only wheat. Farmers in the southern colonies did not try to grow crops on the coastal plains.

    New Englads soil and climate were harsh on the settlers, with really cold snowy winters to unfertile soil, the new settlers could only find little portions of fertile land where they could farm, and they could do it during the winter since all crops would die, so the main reason that plantations didn't develop in New England was the soil and climate.
