Why was being a small nation a problem for Japan prior to World War II?

    It was often disregarded by the powerful European countries and many people didn't take it seriously. They had little connection with the Western world since they had been isolated for so long, so they totally missed industrialization and were not nearly as modern and advanced as the European countries were at the time.
