I believe the sepoy rebellion moved indians closer to independence

The sepoy rebellion was initiated by Indians rebels to break free from the control of the British' companies that occupied Indian territory.

Even though the rebellion failed, it created distrust in the heart of British' government to ever trust indian millitary again. This made the British chose to separate its influence from the indian millitary, which provide a little room for the Indians to mobilize for independence.
