When hurricanes rise up in the Atlantic Ocean, Georgia's fourteen barrier islands are often some of the first places affected. What is the BEST explanation for why some barrier islands are kept as state and national wildlife refuges and closed to human development? A The sometimes-extreme weather makes some of the barrier islands unfit for human habitation. B They are kept as refuges because some wildlife only thrive when hurricanes cast food sources up onto the beaches. C Their natural beauty makes them tourist attractions which makes more money for the state than private development could. D Preserving their natural ecosystems offers the best chance of preserving them so they can shield the coast from the worst weather of hurricanes.
