The Jungle was a book written by Upton Sinclair. The book exposed the unhealthy working conditions in the meat-packing industry. The author described the meat often packed as diseased, rotten and contaminated. This shocked the public and led to new federal food safety laws.

The role of the author in using media as a way of exposing this appalling trend was what led to a change in the society and new laws being put in place to checkmate the findings.
