The general sentiment of the 1960s was extremely in favor of the space race and the Us was heavily invested in the exploration of the space even as the costs for doing so were soaring exorbitantly high.

The President understood this and so did not want to tinker with the hopes and aspiration of the common people who had come to love these efforts.

These efforts were also a matter of great national pride and thus seen well worth the cost they incurred on the people and the tax paying part of the country.
